Healthy Happenings: Brain and Memory
As I am sure you have noticed, the last three years have stressed our brains causing brain fog, lack of focus, lack of good judgement, and memory issues. Many customers are concerned about dementia and Alzheimer’s but most of the time it can be the result of being infected with COVID or the immunization. It seems like COVID issues occur either immediate months, or even years later. however, the problem seems daunting, but there are practical lifestyle steps we all can incorporate into our daily routines to manage various symptoms. You may find that many of the suggestions lead to great overall health.

Brain Boosting Foods:

  1. Fatty fish, ground flaxseeds, walnuts, dark leafy greens (for Omega-3 fatty acids)
  2. Olive oil and nuts (for vitamin E)
  3. Coconut oil a form of medium chain triglyceride (MCT oil)
  4. Cantaloupe, carrots, kale, mango, spinach, sweet potato (for Beta-carotene)
  5. Oranges, papaya, strawberries, red peppers, kiwifruit, tomatoes (for vitamin c)
  6. Blueberries, cranberries, boysenberries (for anthocyanin)
  7. Whole grains, fruits and vegetables, dried beans (for low-glycemic carbs)
  8. Bananas, chick peas, meats, spinach (for vitamin c)
  9. Green leafy vegetables (for folate)
  10. Eggs, meats, poultry, dairy product, shellfish (for vitamin B12)

Supplements :
1. Low levels of vitamin B6, B12, and Folate can affect cognitive function and memory
2. Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids works to combat inflammation and fight free-radical activity.
3. DHA-is an essential fatty acid found in fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel, as well as in mother’s milk.
building block of brain cells, critical for neurogenesis. Also improves brain cells’ ability to communicate with each other.
4.*** Phophatidyserine (PS)-a fat component of cell membranes in plants and animals. Clinical trials suggest improved memory, learning concentration, and word recall in older adults.
5.***Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC-An amino acid the body produces; also found in dairy foods and red meat. ALC may help produce acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter.

Herbal Remedies :
1. Chinese (or Korean) ginseng protects the cells of the brain, increases mental alertness, and boosts serotonin levels
2. Ginkgo Biloba helps increase the blood supply to the brain.
3. Gotu kola has been used for centuries in India to increase the efficiency of the brain.
4. Pine Bark and Grape-seed extracts contain antioxidants and help support liver function.
5. Huperzine A-A compound purified from Chinese toothed club moss. Said to improve memory and mental function; it is used in China for dementia.

*** Turmeric (Curcumin) can interact with some prescriptions, including blood thinner and certain ulcer medications.

General Recommendations:

  1. Avoid exposure to aluminum. Acid rain has contributed a lot of aluminum to tap water. Other everyday sources of aluminum include aluminum cookware, canned drinks, some antacids, and antiperspirants.
  2. Exercise regularly. Just 15-20 minutes of daily exercise can significantly support brain function.

Words to Live By:Sometimes doing the right thing takes more guts than I’m able to muster, Lord. If I do what I know I should, people might get angry or exclude me. Help me, Lord. Give me the strength of character to follow you, even when it makes me unpopular for a while. I entrust the end result to you.”       -Anonymous Prayer
