Store Update:  After watching GMOs Revealed last month we have decided to focus on providing our customers with only certified organic and/or non-GMO certified products, if and when possible.  I believe our health depends on it.  You will notice a reduction in teas and groceries due to these changes we are making.  October is non-GMO awareness month and we will again donate a portion of our sales to this worthwhile project. Stay tuned for more information and a raffle for their wonderful canvas bags.

Healthy Happenings: Back to School Immune Support

As we head back to school I would like to help you learn simple steps to boost your families immune system to arm you against the dreaded on slot of infections, like upper respiratory infections, influenza, earaches, sinus infections, and the list goes on.   And we know when your children bring these viruses home it has a tendency to go to the rest of the family. When children are given immunizations many develop a weakened immune system and can develop symptoms like fever, inflammation and pain.  One of the things we need to remember is after getting a virus we can develop natural immunity to that virus.  The problem is now many individuals are given antibiotics for minor viruses, causing a rise in antibiotic resistant infections.  Most viruses and many infections will clear up on their own if given enough time and a few natural remedies.

·         Dietary Recommendations:

v  Breakfast:  Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, children should start the day with high quality protein and quality fat source.  These could be eggs, homemade smoothies, peanut or nut butter on a whole grain slice of bread, organic whole fat yogurt with nuts and fresh fruit.  The mistake many make (mainly because of advertising) is feeding children high carbohydrate foods, like cereals, pancakes, or pastries.  This breakfast can lead to a sugar spike which can hamper learning and decrease the immune system.

v  Lunch:  Lunch is an opportunity to provide high quality protein (grass fed beef, lamb or pork, wild caught fish, or free range chicken, hummus, hard boiled eggs).   Fresh fruit & vegetables (in season) and a healthy carbohydrate (brown rice, whole grain pasta, whole grain wrap, or quinoa salad).

v  Snacks:  Natural cheese squares, plantain chips, homemade gluten free or grain free cookies or bites.  See recipe below.  Fresh fruit and nut butter.

·         Nutritional Supplements:

v  Vitamin C 250 to 500 mg 2-3 times per day to enhance immunity

v  Garlic is immune stimulating the most effective form is raw.  It can be given to children daily to boost immunity.  Just cut ½ to 1 clove of fresh garlic into small pieces, allow resting for 10 minutes to activate the allicin, place on spoon and cover with honey for the child to swallow.

v  Epicoris a fermented yeast product that has been shown to increase activity of white blood cells called Natural Killer cells.

v  Colloidal Silvercan be used daily to prevent infections and with more intense dosages, can fight viral and bacterial infections.

·         Herbal Supplements:

v  Echinacea drops or Esberitox which is a super charged echinaceacan be used at the first signs of any type of infection.  ** Echinacea should not be taken by individuals with autoimmune issues.

v  Olive leaf or Oil of Oreganocan be used to fight infections.

·         Homeopathic Remedies:

v  Oscillococcinum can be taken at the first signs of the flu

v  Influenzinum can be used to prevent the flu by taking a dose a few times a week and a remedy for active flu

v  Cold Calm is used for cold symptoms

v  Sinus or sinusalia is used for symptoms of sinus infections

v  Earache relief and Mullein Garlic drops are used at the first signs of ear infection

v  Individual homeopathic remedies can be used for various symptoms

·         General Recommendation

Emotional health, excellent nutrition, exercise, adequate rest, and a relatively low-stress lifestyle are the requirements for a strong immune system.  I know this is a tall order but if you can address these issues there should be less illness and trips to the doctor.
