Healthy Happenings: Natural Remedies for Influenza from Smart Medicine for Healthier Living

I had decided to focus on the flu this month because so many customers and children had been diagnosed with Influenze A and many schools and nursing homes have been limiting visitors.  Some of my customers have reported they received the flu shot this year and still were diagnosed with influenza A.  Then two days after Christmas Rosa and I came down with the flu.  We have suggested Esberitox or elderberry syrup and vitamin C to prevent infection but I did not take my own advice.    I have learned a few lessons that I can share with you; 1.  Don’t reduce the fever unless you are totally miserable, fevers are used by the body to rid itself of any infection, viral or bacterial. 2.  don’t use over the counter decongestants, nasal discharge is the other way the body has to get the infected secretions out of the body. 3.  Get plenty of rest and wash hands frequently.

*       Dietary Recommendations

1.       If you don’t feel like eating, it is best not to force yourself.  When you do feel hungry, choose easily digested foods as juices, lemonade (hot or cold), herbal teas, applesauce, and lots of nourishing broth and homemade soups.  Miso and chicken soup are good choices.

2.       Getting plenty of fluids, including soups, is particularly important.  Fluids help to thin secretions, making it easier for the body to clear them, and also help to prevent constipation and flush toxins from the body.

3.       Avoid dairy products, which and a tendency to increase and thicken mucus.

*       Nutritional Supplements

1.       Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory properties and helps to ease the course of respiratory illness.  Bioflavonoids have potent antiviral properties and can be useful at any stage of an infection.  Take 500-1000 mg of five times a day for five days to one week.

2.       To help boost you immune system, take 5-10 mg of zinc five times daily for five days to one week.  Take zinc with food to prevent stomach upset.

*       Herbal Remedies

1.       Chamomile tea can help you rest and relax.  You can take twice a day.

2.       Echinacea and Goldenseal stimulate the immune system.  Goldenseal also helps soothe mucous membranes.  Esberitox can be used to boost immune system and can be used as a preventative by taking one dose daily.

3.       In a 1995 Israeli study, Elderberry Extract was found to reduce both the severity of symptoms and the duration of flu (two to three days in the treated group versus six days in the placebo group).

4.       Garlic helps to detoxify the body.  Take 500mg (or one clove) three times a day for up to five days.

5.       Ginger Tea is excellent if the stomach is affected.  Take a cup as needed.

 Homeopathic Remedies

1.       At the first sign that flu is developing, take 4 pellets of  Anas Barbariae (Oscillococcinum) every two hours, for a total of five doses.

2.       If you are feeling chilly, restless, and weak, choose Arsenicum album.

3.       Bryonia is good if symptoms include a headache, cough, constipation, thirst, and irritability.  Take one dose of Bryonia three to four times a day for up to three days.

4.       Take Gelsemium if you have heavy, droopy eyes; feel weak and tired, with aches and chills up and down your back.  You can take one dose of Gelsemimum three to four times a day for up to eight doses.

5.       Rhus Toxicodendron  is good if you are feeling restless and complain of  achy, stiff muscles. Take one dose of Rhus Toxicodendron  three times a day for up to three days.

As always, contact your pharmacist regarding any potential vitamin/drug interactions.  Notify physician regarding any alternative remedies.

Save the Earth Tip: Filter out wasted paper.  Rather than using bleached paper coffee filters, which may contain dioxins, and are a very short lived use of valuable trees, replace the filter in your coffee machine at home or work with a metal-mesh version, which can be reused thousands of times.
