Healthy Happenings: Non-GMO Information Update

      I wrote a little about the dangers of Genetically Modified Organisms last month but because I am so passionate about the subject I wanted to include new information (studies from 2012 and 2013) written by Dr. Don M. Huber, Emeritus Professor, Purdue University.  Dr. Huber reports “genetic engineering is more like a virus infection than a normal breeding process.” “As professor Smith of Oxford University said, “Yes, all plants and animals contain protein, fat or oil, and carbohydrate; the DNA of all living organisms is made up of just for nucleosides; and virtually all proteins are made from just 20 amino acids.  This does not imply that everything containing these basic building blocks is safe for humans.  The same units arranged in different ways are contained in the small pox virus, bubonic plague, and influenza; deadly nightshade and other poisonous plants; creatures such as poisonous jellyfish, scorpions, deadly snakes, and sharks; and people who talk about absolute non-sense.”

      Rather than encouraging independent research on GMO safety or performance, the companies have denied access to them, forbidden publication of data, and threatened legal action if negative data are disclosed.  The indiscriminate use of glyphosate and GMO crops are precipitating a major chronic health and environmental crisis. 

      The benefits claimed for GMO’s are failed promises.  Reduced root growth, lower nutrient density, increased disease, greater stress susceptibility of GMO crops and need for more pesticides are well documented.  The abundance of weeds and insects resistant to GMO plants, or the chemicals they were engineered to tolerate, complicate our ability to control these pests.  GMO’s should be characterized as toxic chemical accumulating and pesticide containing foods. 

      Contrary to the common claim of safety, a large volume or peer-reviewed scientific information shows that genetically engineered products and the Roundup herbicide that 85% of GE plants were engineered to tolerate, are chronically toxic to human and animal tissues and lead to cancer, premature death, kidney and liver failure, and blood disorders.  There are NO peer-reviewed scientific studies that show GMO crops, or the chemicals they are engineered to tolerate or produce, are safe for human or animal consumption.

     His paper ends with: It is much more than a “right to know” issue! GMOs are a serious chronic health and safety threat to us and to our environment.  Future historians may well look back upon our time and write, not about how many pounds of pesticides we did or did not apply, but about how will we are to sacrifice our children and jeopardize future generation for this massive experiment we call genetic engineering that is based on failed promises and flawed science, just to benefit the bottom line of a commercial enterprise.

     This is the reason I have made the decision to purchase organic fruits and vegetables (I use www.doortodoororganics.com.), get my meat and milk from farmers, I do not purchase many packaged foods, when I do I make sure they are organic.  Do not despair none of us can eat 100% organic work toward 80/20 living.  When we eat CLEAN 80% of the time our bodies can deal with 20%.   

 

·         Lab Animals Suffer From GMOs

When the American Academy of Environmental Medicine reviewed GMO studies, animals fed GE food suffered from, gastrointestinal disorders, immune problems, liver and kidney damage, accelerated aging, insulin problems, and reproductive issues. Recent research adds tumors and premature death to the list.

·         People Recover after Removing GMOs

           Millions of people are seeking non-GMO foods.  When they switch, many report significant health             improvement in weight loss, digestive issues, allergies and asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, autistic symptoms, fatigue, skin rashes, depression, headaches, infertility, etc.

·         Livestock Also Recover

           When farmers and vets replace GE soy and corn with non-GE feed, they report improvements in livestock’s immune, gastrointestinal, and reproductive health, lower death rates, fewer birth defects, and “happier” animals.

·         GMOs Contain Toxic Herbicides

           Most GMOs are soaked with toxic weed killers such as Roundup (active ingredient glyphosate), which studies link to cancer, birth defects, endocrine disruption, digestive disorders, liver and kidney damage, pre-mature death, nutritional deficiencies, and immune problems (via gut bacterial disruption).

·         GMO Corn Produces Toxic Insecticides called BT-Toxin

           Some GE corn varieties produce and insecticide that provokes immune responses and can damage cell walls--- possibly causing digestive disorders and permeable intestines.

Save the Earth Tip: Choose Ugly Veggies   Odd shapes and unusual pigments generally have no impact on the flavor of produce, but by insisting on strict uniformity, supermarkets force farmers to waste huge amounts of food, and limit the variety sold.  This also cuts the farmers’ profit margins, retailers, know you’d be delighted to eat varied veggies and funny fruit, and enjoy the diversity in shape, color, and size that nature intended.

Recipe of the Month

No Bake Raw Energy Bites

1 cup oatmeal or spelt flakes                                                   ¼ cup cacao nibs

2/3 cup coconut flakes                                                            1/3 cup honey or pure maple syrup

½ cup organic peanut butter                                                   1 tablespoon chia seeds

¼ cup ground flax                                                                   1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons maca powder

Combine all ingredients in large bowl.  Let chill in refrigerator for 30 minutes.  Roll into small balls.

Store in refrigerator or freezer for freshness
