Healthy Happenings:
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Gary’s niece, Tammy, was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 days before his diagnosis. So I decided to devote this edition of the newsletter to breast cancer prevention. What I have learned since opening the store is that the leading risk factor for breast cancer are exposure to toxic environmental estrogens called xenoestrogens and the use of the hormone estrogen. Environmental estrogens are dangerous for several reasons: They act like estrogen in the body; they cause our own estrogens to convert to cancer-causing forms of estrogen; they increase our risk for breast, ovarian and endometrial cancer; they promote infertility by suppressing progesterone; and they cause early puberty. Xenoestrogens are found in soft plastic products (i.e. plastic water bottles)’ plastic wrap, medical plastics, pesticide-laden foods ( fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat0, dioxins, cosmetics containing parabens, chemicals used to bleach feminine hygiene products, dry cleaning chemicals and nail polish.

Dietary factors in breast cancer

Factors That May Increase Risk Factors That May Lower Risk
Meats (unless grass fed) Fish (Preferably wild caught)
Total Fat Whole Grains & Legumes
Dairy (Unless grass fed) Cabbage
Refined Sugar Vegetables
Total Calories Nuts
Alcohol Fruits

Daily Plan for Preventing Cancer

  • Have a positive mental attitude

  • Have a healthy lifestyle

  • Eat a health-promoting diet

  • Consider supplementary measures

Diet:

  1. Eat a “rainbow” assortment of fruits and vegetables (organic if possible)

  2. Reduce exposure to pesticides.

  3. Reduce the intake of conventional (factory farmed) meat and other animal foods.

  4. Eat the right types of fats-fish oil, coconut oil, olive oil, natural butter.

  5. Avoid high-calorie, low-nutrient foods such as junk food, candy, and soft drinks.

  6. Consider replacing table salt with Celtic sea salt or Himalayan pink salt; limit sodium intake in packaged foods and increase potassium rich foods.

  7. Choose foods that help your body detoxify and eliminate waste. I consume ground flax seeds daily.

Supplements:

  1. High quality multi-vitamin at least twice a day.

  2. Flavonoids i.e. green tea extract, quercetin, grape seed extract, ginkgo biloba, milk thistle, bilberry, and hawthorn.

  3. Drink 3 cups of green tea or 1 green drink daily.

  4. Probiotic supplement providing 5-10 billion viable cells daily.

  5. Fish oil or cod liver oil daily

  6. Turmeric supplement.

  7. Vitamin D3

Healthy Lifestyle:

  • Yoga

  • Tai Chi

  • Meditation

As always, contact your pharmacist regarding any potential vitamin/drug interactions. Notify physician regarding any alternative remedies.

Save the Earth Tip: Don’t stick with Nonstick

Use stainless steel saucepans or iron bottom cookware instead of nonstick pans. Overheated nonstick surfaces release fumes that kill birds such as canaries very quickly-which does not bode well for the inhabitants (feathered or otherwise) of your kitchen.

Words to Live By:

Regrets about yesterday and fear of tomorrow rob us of the spirit of the moment.
