Healthy Happenings:
Healthy Children

As the new school year starts for our children and grandchildren; young adults going away to college it is a great time to get into a healthy routine. Schools are attempting to improve their school lunches using low fat and fat free foods. I agree with reducing or eliminating junk foods, and soda pop. I worry that so many children will continue to consume packaged foods that are stripped of their nutrients, leaving them less satisfied and even hungrier due to the lack of nutrients. Providing our families with high quality nutrient dense foods can help with improved learning potential and the ability to maintain a healthy weight. Add to that a return to regular exercise programs such as walking programs and/or gym classes our children can thrive this year.

Diet & Nutrition Therapy from Treat Your Child the Natural Way by Amanda Cochrane

Diet-The ideal diet is composed of a wide range of fresh, natural foods, including:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables, especially green leafy varieties

  • Whole grain cereals such as brown rice, whole grain fresh baked breads, whole grain pasta, oat flakes, barley, rye, spelt and corn.

  • Fish such as Atlantic wild caught salmon and wild caught cod, and oily varieties such as sardines and mackerel.

  • Free range poultry

  • Farm fresh eggs

  • Grass fed meat-lamb, beef, pork

  • Whole dairy products-milk, yogurt, kefir, and natural cheese

  • Nuts-walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds (not peanuts) and seeds-flax, chia seeds, hemp hearts, sunflower, pumpkin and sesame, which can be ground and sprinkled onto yogurt and cereals.

Healthy Hints

  • Start the day with home-made muesli made with organic oat, spelt, or barley flakes, grated apple, chopped dates, nuts and a little whole milk. Alternatively, give your child a slice of whole grain or sprouted toast with butter or almond butter or sunflower butter with a piece of fresh fruit, plain yogurt with natural sweetener and fruit, or farm fresh eggs and vegetables.

  • Offer sticks of raw vegetables and fruit to snack on between meals, rather than cookies or crackers. Carrots, celery, apples, bananas, domestic grapes and pears are ideal, as are strawberries, raspberries, peaches, melon, and pineapple during the summer months.

  • Dried fruits such as organic raisins, non-sulfite apricots, peaches, pears, dates and figs make a good alternative to sweet snacks.

  • When children are older (over 3 years old) or when you feel they are ready you can add unsalted or crispy nuts such as almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts and pecans to their diet. It is best to avoid peanuts, as some children can have an extreme allergic reaction to them.

As always, contact your pharmacist regarding any potential vitamin/drug interactions. Notify physician regarding any alternative remedies.

Recipe of the Month: Farmer’s Markets are full of fresh grown vegetables at this time of year. Zucchini is abundant as always this recipe is from one of my facebook friends. Children can help make these nutritious pizzas.

Zucchini Pizza

1 large zucchini, cut into ¼ inch slices

Olive oil

Celtic sea salt

Pepper

Organic Pizza Sauce, I use Eden brand

Oregano & Basil

Mozzarella cheese, grated

Parmesan Cheese, grated

  1. Brush both sides of the zucchini slices with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper.

  2. Place on a baking sheet; broil 2 minutes on each side.

  3. Top each zucchini slice with small amount of pizza sauce, sprinkle on oregano and basil, and mozzarella cheese.

  4. Broil 2 minutes until cheese is melted

  5. Top warm pizzas with parmesan cheese. Enjoy

Be careful the cheese can get very hot.
