Healthy Happenings: Coping with Anxiety

We are living through a very trying time as we deal with restrictions, confusion, questions no one can seem to answer. It is no wonder anxiety is taking over our lives right now. Many try to cope by using pharmaceuticals, junk food, caffeine, and alcohol. Alternatively, I encourage my customers to adapt some simple natural coping mechanisms, such as meditation and moderate daily exercise programs. We are so excited to be able to offer some of the wellness tools for you in our quiet relaxing Wellness Loft. In addition, there are several natural remedies and activities I recommend to help you and your family cope with overwhelming anxiety. My go-to practice is a 15–20 minute meditation. Currently, my personal goal is to repeat this practice as many days during the week as possible.

  1. Maintain a healthy blood sugar level. I have struggled with anxiety for several years. Finally, I found out that out-of -control sugar intake was contributing to my anxiety. When I started to eat a high protein low carbohydrate diet I finally was able to control my anxiety. I continue to eat 5 small meals per day.
  2. Make sure every meal includes fresh fruits and vegetables along with some protein. The older I get the more protein my body needs.  In general, we need at least 60 grams of protein each day.
  3. Beverages containing caffeine can increase nervousness and anxiety. Avoid coffee, caffeinated tea and energy drinks. I found a wonderful substitute for coffee made from chicory root, an herbal coffee called Teechino. This brand features several flavors, some of which I am happy to offer at Health Matters.

  1. The B vitamins are important nutrients for the nervous system. I prefer co-enzyme B Complex because it provides body ready forms of essential B vitamins. Take 25 mg of B-complex 1-2 times daily. If you take a good multivitamin, take the B-complex at a different time. B-vitamins are water soluble, and the body excretes the excesses.
  2. Magnesium is vital to a stable nervous system.
  3. Chromium I prefer Chromate to help regulate blood sugar levels.
  4. L Theanine is an amino acid is used for anxiety, depression, and mood related disorders.
  5. GABA is a neurotransmitter (a substance that transmits information from one nerve cell to another in the brain).

***** Herbal remedies can interact with pharmaceuticals, and you should always check with your pharmacist before taking herbal supplements.

  1. Passionflower is an excellent relaxant.
  2. St. John’s Wort wort has noteworthy calming and antidepressant effects. This remedy can affect birth control.
  3. Valerian is a strong calmative that is useful for the physical manifestations of anxiety. Studies also show it is helpful for insomnia.

Homeopathic Remedies

***** In my experience homeopathic remedies are the safest, most effective remedies that do not interfere with pharmaceutical medications.

  1. Newton Nervousness-Anxiety is formulated for symptoms such as nervous discomfort, irritability, racing thought, restlessness, tension and worry.
  2. Coffea cruda helps relieve anxiety associated with obsessive thoughts.
  3. Aconitum napellus is used for sudden and shocking trauma or psychological shock.
  4. Ignatia is good if you suffer a panic attack. It is also useful if you are restless and have difficulty sleeping.
  5. Newton Panic Button is a combination remedy for panic attacks.
  6. Passionflora is helpful for nervousness and difficulty falling asleep.
  1. Rescue Remedy is the first choice to alleviate any crisis caused stress that results in fear, panic, anxiety, tension, and/or apprehension. I carry this remedy with me.
  2. Aspen is good for anxiety, and vague, nameless fear.
  3. Cherry Plum will help if you become fearful and excessively anxious in situations where you have no control.
  4. Sweet Chestnut should relieve feelings of anguish, torment, alienation, and isolation.
  5. Wild Oat is used if you are fearful and anxious over what the future may bring.
