Healthy Happenings: Fracture Care from Smart Medicine for Healthier Living


Many of my Facebook friends already know about my broken foot.  Last Saturday while reading and walking on an unfamiliar street I fell in a hole in the road.  Reading and walking is not new for me, I started in grade school and this is my first real injury.  So I thought I would share with you the natural remedies that seem to be working for me.  I immediately ran (no actually drove) to Zerbo’s Health Food Store in Livonia for arnica.  I took the arnica internally and topically in addition to the ice packs.  After the X-rays showed the fracture of my left foot (Thank you God because I can still drive) I took Arnica 200C (the highest potency) over the weekend.  I am very fortunate to be almost pain free now just having a little trouble with the hard walking boot.  And really have trouble keeping my foot elevated.


Dietary Guidelines:


  •       Bone Building Food-Eat lean protein, plus bone building foods containing calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D.  Calcium rich foods include dairy products, and green leafy vegetables.  Phosphorus is found in bananas, whole grains, nuts, eggs, fish and poultry.  Vitamin D found in eggs, and saltwater fish, and is synthesized by the body when the skin is exposed to sunshine without sunscreen.


  •       Foods to Eliminate-Do not consume soda pop and alcohol due to toxicity to bone tissue.


Nutritional Supplement:


  •       Calcium and magnesium will help build bone.  Take equal amounts 3 times per day for maximum of 2 months.


  •       Vitamin C 1000mg 3 times per day


  •       Chlorophyll provides trace minerals that help rebuild bone tissue. Take as directed for 2-3 months.   

Dr. Abel recommends 6-10mg daily at night.


  •       Vitamin D improves the absorption of calcium


Herbal Supplements:


  •        Horsetail is high in silica, which helps the body absorb the calcium needed for bone tissue healing.  Take 500mg 3 times a day for two weeks.


  •       Nettle is high in silica and other trace minerals.


  •       Oatstrawis high in silica and is a mild relaxant.

Save the Earth Tip


Keep Pests at bay When faced with insects in your kitchen, instead of resorting to a store bought chemical solution that’s dangerous to children and the environment, try some natural alternatives.  Many insects have an aversion to basil; ants don’t like cucumber peel or peppermint; weevils can be kept out of your flour and cereals by adding bay leaves.


Recipe of the Month:


California Chipotle Chopped Salad from Fitness magazine


4 tablespoons olive oil                                       1 head Romaine lettuce, cut into bite-


2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar                                     size pieces


2 tablespoons agave nectar                              1 large tomato, finely chopped


¼ cup fresh squeezed lime juice                      ¼ red onion, finely chopped


1 15 ounce can black beans, rinsed                 1 avocado, pitted, peeled and diced


And drained                                                       ½ cup cooked quinoa


1 clove garlic, minces                                       2 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro


¼ teaspoon chipotle chili powder


¼ teaspoon Celtic sea salt


1.      To make vinaigrette: Puree 3 tablespoons olive oil, vinegar, agave nectar and lime juice in a blender.


2.      In a small saucepan, heat remaining oil over medium heat. Sauté black beans, chili powder, garlic, and salt for 5 minutes.  Let cool.


3.      In large bowl, combine lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, quinoa, black bean mixture and cilantro. 


4.      Toss gently with vinaigrette to coat.
